Google's recent research highlighted the remarkable energy efficiency of its TPUs, estimating an average energy expenditure of just 0.24 watt-hours for a text-based AI prompt, alongside a 33-fold improvement in efficiency over the past year. For an organization with the scale of OpenAI, transitioning away from Nvidia's architecture to more efficient and customized solutions like Google's TPUs could result in substantial cost savings. This growing trend of major tech players investing in and adopting custom AI chips from various providers, including their own in-house developments, poses a significant competitive challenge to Nvidia.
