Currency Stability in Cuba Amid Advanced Predictive Models

05/28 2025

Stability has marked the recent performance of major currencies in Cuba, extending a trend that has persisted for four consecutive days. As of this Wednesday morning, the exchange rates have remained unchanged from last week's levels. The US dollar is still valued at 370 Cuban pesos (CUP), while the euro stands firm at 390 CUP. Similarly, the Free Convertible Currency (MLC) continues to hold steady at 260 CUP. This consistency reflects a broader period of equilibrium in the Cuban currency market.

Innovative methods are reshaping the prediction landscape of Cuba's informal currency market. The Observatory of Currencies and Finance of Cuba (OMFi), an organization linked with independent media outlet elTOQUE, has introduced a groundbreaking approach leveraging artificial intelligence and econometric models. These tools enable highly precise forecasts concerning fluctuations in the informal market, particularly regarding the US dollar. According to economist Pavel Vidal, the lead researcher behind the initiative, these predictions benefit numerous economic participants, ranging from individuals planning remittances or travel to entrepreneurs managing import-related risks. By integrating real-time data sourced from social networks and digital trading platforms, OMFi has significantly reduced uncertainty about future exchange rate movements.

Despite occasional challenges, such as speculative pressures and political announcements, the reliability of these forecasts has steadily improved. Notably, during the first four months of 2025, the average error margin was just 1.8%, marking a significant advancement compared to previous periods. While past events like banking policy changes and government statements temporarily disrupted accuracy, the overall improvement underscores the effectiveness of the new methodology. With enhanced precision, the Cuban economy can now better anticipate and adapt to potential shifts in its currency dynamics, fostering greater stability and confidence among all stakeholders involved in the financial ecosystem.
